Chemotherapy Treatment for Breast Cancer
Almost everyone who had been diagnosed of breast cancer would have crossed the phase of chemotherapy either before or after surgery or in some lucky cases as a replacement for surgery. Chemotherapy, in a generic sense means the treatment of administering strong medicinal drugs to treat cancer cells. When talking about breast cancer, chemo is either given before the surgery to reduce the intensity of the cancer or post-surgery to doubly ensure that the surgery yields positive effects .
There are certain cancer conditions wherein you can decide yourself whether you should go in for chemotherapy or not. Chemotherapy will be prescribed for those who get hormone-receptor-negative and HER2 positive. If the cancer is hormone-receptor-positive, hormonal therapy can be given before or after chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is also given to prevent estrogen-receptor-positive cancer from relapse. It is said that more than one-half of those diagnosed with breast cancer in the US suffer from this type of cancer. Women having Stage I or II cancer along with those with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer belong to the less-severe category. Cancer is less likely to relapse. So, chemo should not be unnecessarily given. But there are also some cases under the same category for whom, the cancer cells eventually occurred at some other area in the body. This brings in a necessity for a reliable method of finding if at all chemo is needed after the surgery so that the patient doesn’t have to bother about cancer again. All we have with us is the Oncotype-DX Test, which is the only way to check if the cancer is likely to return and if the chemotherapy treatment on the patient would be effective.
Chemo is often a must for women having Stage III or Stage IV type breast cancer. The good news is that there are newer and newer chemo medicines developed for breast cancer. Drugs like taxon, abraane, taxotere, adriamycin, ellence and many others have opened doors for better combination of drugs to make chemotherapy a success. But the sad part is that, not all medicines work well for everyone. So, one need to be patient towards the changes in prescription until the doc finds the one that works.
Though chemotherapy might seem to be your rescuer from cancer(it is, of course), yet, for all the side effects it may cause, you should decide about having it done only if your cancer is so serious that the side effects are worth bearing. If the woman is in the pre-menopausal stage, there is a chance that periods might not come even after the treatment is over. Other side-effects include mood changes, thinning hair, diarrhea and so on. Women diagnosed with non-invasive, less severe cancer like DCIS should not be given chemo as they may develop side effects which may become more severe than the cancer itself.
